10. Nurture your gut

The gut microbiome — the vast community of bacteria living in your digestive tract — is increasingly understood to influence not just digestion, but immunity, mental health, metabolism, and even how quickly we age. A healthy, diverse microbiome helps regulate inflammation, which is one of the key drivers of age-related disease.
To support good gut health, eat a wide variety of plant foods (diversity matters more than quantity), include fermented foods like yoghurt, kefir, kimchi, and sauerkraut regularly, and stay physically active — exercise has its own positive effect on microbial diversity.
11. Manage stress — and actually mean it

Chronic psychological stress is one of the more insidious accelerators of biological ageing. Research has demonstrated that people under sustained high stress have measurably shorter telomeres — meaning their cells are biologically older than their years. In some studies, the difference equated to nearly a decade of additional ageing.
The antidote isn’t to eliminate stress entirely (that’s not realistic), but to build regular, genuine recovery into your life. Meditation, time in nature, creative pursuits, exercise, and strong social connections all help buffer the physiological impact of stress. Even 15 minutes of focused breathing or mindfulness daily has been shown to have meaningful benefits.
12. Make sleep non-negotiable

Sleep is when the body does its most intensive repair work — clearing cellular waste, consolidating memory, regulating hormones, and restoring immune function. Cut it short habitually, and the visible and invisible signs of ageing accelerate. Research has directly linked poor sleep to shorter telomeres, faster skin ageing, and higher risk of heart disease, diabetes, and cognitive decline.
Most adults need seven to nine hours per night. If you’re consistently falling short, it’s worth treating sleep as a health priority rather than a luxury. Consistent sleep and wake times, a cool and dark room, and limiting screens in the hour before bed are evidence-based starting points.
