Most of us look after the inside of our homes carefully. We vacuum, repaint, fix the tap, replace the blinds. But step out the front door and look back. When did the driveway last look like the day it was poured? When did the path to the front door stop being pale and start being grey-green?
Exterior surfaces don’t get dirty overnight. They darken a fraction at a time, so slowly that the people who see them every day never notice. Then a neighbour has their driveway cleaned, and suddenly yours looks thirty years older than it is.
At JetCleanCo, we clean driveways, paths, walls, roofs and outdoor areas across Sydney. The most common thing we hear once we’ve finished is some version of: “I thought that was just the colour of the concrete.”
It almost never is. It’s dirt, mould and algae, and it comes off.
It’s a safety issue, not just a cosmetic one
The layer that turns a path green in winter is alive. Moss, algae and mould thrive on any shaded, damp surface: the side path that never sees sun, the steps by the laundry, the pavers under the pergola.
When wet, that layer is as slippery as ice. Falls at home are one of the leading causes of injury for Australians over sixty, and a slick outdoor step is exactly the kind of hazard that’s easy to live with until the morning it isn’t.
Cleaning these surfaces properly removes the growth rather than just wetting it. It’s one of the simplest things you can do to make a home safer for yourself, for older parents, and for grandchildren who run first and look second.
The jobs you shouldn’t be doing from a ladder
Driveways get the attention because we walk on them. Look up, though, and the roofline tells a different story.
Gutters, fascias, eaves and awnings collect years of grime, cobwebs and black streaking. On a light-coloured home it’s the first thing a visitor sees. It’s also the part of the house most people quietly ignore, because dealing with it means a ladder, a hose and an afternoon of risk.
We have the equipment to clean elevated surfaces from the ground, safely, and to clear gutters before the summer storms arrive. A whole-of-house clean, top to bottom, is what produces the “is that the same house?” result. The driveway alone is only half the picture.
More pressure is not a better clean
One of the most important things to understand about exterior cleaning is that not every surface should be cleaned the same way.
It’s tempting to assume that more pressure means a better clean. In reality, excessive pressure on the wrong surface can potentially cause damage.
Hard-wearing surfaces such as concrete can generally tolerate pressure cleaning when the correct equipment and technique are used. Other surfaces require a more considered approach.
Painted walls, rendered surfaces, some roofing materials and more delicate finishes may instead be suited to soft washing.
Soft washing relies on an appropriate cleaning solution to help break down organic buildup, followed by a controlled low-pressure rinse. Rather than trying to blast dirt away with sheer force, the cleaning method is selected according to the surface being treated.
That’s an important distinction, professional exterior cleaning should be about using the right amount of pressure, not the most pressure possible. The right method depends on the surface.
Protecting what is probably your largest asset
For many households, the home is the biggest thing they own. Mould and algae left to establish themselves don’t just look bad, they hold moisture against surfaces, stain concrete permanently, and accelerate wear on paint, render and timber.
Regular exterior cleaning belongs in the same category as gutter maintenance and a fresh coat of paint: routine care that keeps a property looking loved and holds its value. It’s also the single highest-return job before putting a home on the market. Agents will tell you a clean driveway and bright front façade change how buyers feel before they’ve reached the door.
And if you’re not selling, it’s simply a pleasure to pull into a driveway that looks the way you remember it.
Why now
Summer is when outdoor surfaces get seen. Christmas visitors, barbecues, the family coming for lunch on the deck. It’s also when our bookings fill fastest, and late spring is the window to get the winter’s growth off before it’s baked on and before the calendar closes.

At JetCleanCo, we see it regularly across homes, strata properties and commercial sites throughout Sydney. A homeowner may think their concrete is simply showing its age, only to discover that much of the discolouration was accumulated dirt and organic growth.
For us, the goal isn’t simply to apply as much pressure as possible. It’s to understand the surface, determine the appropriate cleaning method and achieve the best result while treating the property with care.
Whether it’s refreshing the family driveway, cleaning an outdoor entertaining area or maintaining the exterior of a large commercial property, regular exterior cleaning can be a relatively simple way to make a property feel cared for again.
Because when it comes to a property, the first impression really does start outside.
