A Whittaker's chocolate shop at Auckland International Airport

In New Zealand, Whittaker’s chocolate isn’t just a treat; it’s a treasured piece of our collective history.

There’s sweet magic in a square of Whittaker’s chocolate. It’s the little reward after a long day, the thoughtful “thinking of you” gift left on a friend’s doorstep, and the nostalgic treat that instantly brings back happy memories of sitting around Grandma’s kitchen table.

James Henry Whittaker’s passion for chocolate began early, while working at a large confectioner in Birmingham, and stayed with him for life.

James Henry Whittaker

It all started it all in 1890, making chocolate at his Christchurch home and selling it from the back of a horse-drawn cart. Six years later he founded his own company—one that would grow into a lasting success.

One hundred and thirty years later, expert chocolate making has been proudly passed down from generation to generation.

At the heart of Whittaker’s chocolate company is a special family in Porirua who have consistently chosen quality with decisions such as continuing to roast their own beans. Today, every Whittaker’s block is created in their Porirua factory, which has been the legendary chocolate’s HQ since 1969. And like their founder, the Whittaker family still believe that if you’re going to do something, do it well.

The Secret of the Silky Finish

So, what makes a Whittaker’s chocolate block so special? Whittaker’s remains one of the few large-scale “bean-to-bar” producers worldwide that still uses traditional, high-end Swiss machinery to achieve that signature smooth chocolate.

The secret lies in their authentic Swiss 5 Roll Refiner. this high-precision machine buffs the chocolate to a micro-fine smoothness, ensuring melt-in-your-mouth chocolate. Whittaker’s also conche their chocolate for long periods, creating the rich, creamy flavour that Kiwis expect.

Ethical Business: Harvesting Whittaker Cocoa Beans

The commitment to “Best is Always Better” doesn’t stop at the New Zealand factory gates in Porirua. Reaching thousands of kilometres across the ocean to the tropical forests of Ghana and other parts of Africa, Whittaker’s remains true to its Good Honest Chocolate philosophy.

Through its partnership with the Rainforest Alliance, it ensures its cocoa is responsibly sourced—protecting the environment while supporting local farming communities.

Through these integral ethical partnerships, Whittaker’s funding provides essential infrastructure projects and supports sustainable farming practices that help protect local cocoa farms. Creating world-class chocolate while fostering respectful relationships with local farming communities makes every bite even sweeter.
