The Great Pyramids of Giza in Egypt, built somewhere between four and five millennia ago, stood as the tallest human-made structure until the Lincoln Cathedral was completed in England in the 1300s. But how? In 2014, the “wet sand” theory shed light on how the Egyptians moved the stones around on the ground. Today, a new theory is emerging on how the stones were then hauled into place thanks to the work of scientists studying Hatnub, an ancient Egyptian quarry that appears to contain a ramp-like system that served as a “force multiplier,” and which would have been in use during the time the Pyramids were built.

It’s been nearly 23 years since Gustav Klimt’s Portrait of a Lady disappeared from the Ricci Oddi art gallery in northern Italy during renovations and presumed stolen. Several times over the years since, red herrings have presented themselves, including claims by a known art thief that he was the perpetrator of the theft and would soon return the painting. That never came to pass. However, in December 2019, a gardener at the gallery discovered a secret panel within the gallery’s walls, containing…guess what…a painting that appears to be the one that went missing all those years ago. Investigators are currently looking into whether the painting is the missing Klimt or just a very well-executed copy.

On May 3, 2007, Gerry and Kate McCann were vacationing with their three children in Portugal, when three-year-old Madeleine disappeared from her bed while the McCanns had dinner nearby. She’s never been found despite an investigation that was to be funded through 2020. However, a recent joint effort by British and Portuguese police has narrowed in on a known paedophile who is believed to have been in Portugal at the time of Madeleine’s disappearance. Authorities say they are “nearer to knowing what happened to Madeleine,” according to the Daily Mail.

In early June 2020, police identified a German national – a convicted paedophile currently in prison for sexual offences and drug trafficking – as the new prime suspect. The man, who has not yet been named, was in the vicinity of the Algarve resort of Praia da Luz on the evening that Madeleine was abducted, and had a telephone conversation that ended just over an hour before she went missing from the holiday apartment where she had been sleeping alone with her younger twin siblings. German investigators have now initiated proceedings against the suspect on suspicion of McCann’s murder.

Now learn about 13 mysteries that were actually solved by psychics.
