The right light in the right place

Install lights in high-traffic areas outdoors, particularly in risky spots such as stairs or where there’s a change in ground level.

Consider the safety and sturdiness of outdoor lights, because this is of prime importance. They’ll be expected to withstand weather conditions over a long period of time, and if you have children, them too.

Consider installing garden lights with sensors, which switch on as soon as someone approaches. These aren’t a good idea if you have pets, but are practical near the house, where traffic tends to be heavier.

Think about using solar lighting, particularly for pathways. They work using small solar panels that store energy during the day, then release it at dusk. The stored energy provides light for several hours. And they’re fast to install, as there’s no connection and no excavation, so no need for an electrician to organise underground cables.
