Most of the rules for moving within a city also apply to interstate moves, but here are a few specific tips to save you time.

* Find out when removalists are at their busiest and book in as early as possible, or save time and extra stress by moving house at less busy times of the year (usually spring, autumn and winter).

* Planning the move in detail as far ahead as you can will save time when you arrive at your destination.

* You’ll be faced with a mountain of boxes at your destination, so use detailed descriptions on each box to make sorting them out a quick-andeasy job. A box labelled ‘clothes’ isn’t much help, but ‘Lucy’s clothes’ will quickly arrive at the right bedroom.

* Consider having a combined garage sale and party to farewell your friends and neighbours. It’s also a great way to ensure you pack only those things that you really need, and to get rid of excess clutter.

* If you’re driving interstate, have the car checked beforehand. Breakdowns cause significant delays that may end up creating problems for the removalist if you don’t reach your destination in time.
