•  On sunny days in winter, open up the house to the north and west to let the sun’s warmth in.

  •  Make sure your house is well insulated. Seal gaps around doors and windows. Cover windows with thick curtains and pelmets.

  • Move heaters away from windows to avoid unnecessary heat loss.

  • Before turning the heating up, think about putting on another layer of clothing instead.

  • Remember to turn your heating off before you go out of the house and to turn it off or down low before you go to bed.

  • Close doors between heated and unheated areas to keep the warmth in the area you are heating.

  • In gas fires, dust can block air intakes, causing faulty combustion and emission of toxic fumes, including carbon monoxide. If you notice a gas flame burning orange or yellow rather than blue, it’s time to get your heater serviced.

  • Check that your heating appliances are operating efficiently. If in doubt, have them serviced, as they may be using surplus energy.
