Trestle shelving Photo: Handyman

Providing more than 10 metres of storage space this modern shelving is designed to be height adjusted or easily demounted.

Slatted shelves are supported by three A frame trestles that are built using size 10 biscuits to join the rails to the legs.

Strap hinges join the frames at the top. To keep them from spreading, 800mm lengths of 8mm sash cord are knotted between the rails and hidden by the middle shelf.

The slats are secured to cleats with 30mm x 8g galvanised screws and positioned through the frames.

WORKING WITH PRIMED TIMBER
Using one timber size of 66 x 18mm for all the parts keeps the assembly simple, and finger-jointed (FJ) pine comes in long, stable lengths. Use a mitresaw or cut the parts by hand.

Choosing gesso-primed pine ensures the timber is ready for painting and saves time.

TIP Gesso is a white factory-applied primer suited to acrylic or oil paint.
