Consider your options

Deciding to have a swimming pool is just the first of many related decisions. Save time and complications up front by carefully considering your options.

Above or below ground? Pools can be sunk into the ground or built above ground. Your choices involve not just cost (in-ground pools are more expensive) but also space, access for excavation and the length of time you want a pool in your backyard.

Investigate the advantages and disadvantages of concrete or fibreglass, which are the two main options for in-ground pools, before beginning construction. It could save you time and money.

How will the pool be filtered and cleaned? Filtration and cleaning systems vary not just in their mode of action but in the amount of input you have to devote to maintenance. Way up the short-term costs over long-term convenience for minimum maintenance.

Think about what sort of pool fencing you need and want – timber, metal or glass – taking the cost and look into consideration, along with maintenance. In a small area, or where there are external views, glass fencing can turn your swimming pool into a garden feature, and it’s easy to clean and maintain, without ongoing costs.

In Australia and New Zealand, it is compulsory to fence in swimming pools and ornamental pools that are more than 30 cm deep (40 cm in New Zealand) – check regulations with your local council. (In South Africa, check current pool fencing regulations with your local authority.) These areas must be fitted with childproof gates that are kept shut at all times. Never prop open a safety gate in case children gain access.
