Simple tips for gardening tools

Choose brightly coloured tools. Mark green or blue tools, or those with plain wooden handles, with coloured adhesive tape so you can find them quickly amongst greenery.

For steel cutting tools (spades, forks, hedge trimmers or hoes), fill a box or bucket with sand soaked in oil (use the leftover oil in containers of car engine oil, for example). Stand the tools vertically in the sand next to each other. The sand will remove the soil from the tools and the oil will protect them from rust.

Do a bit of general maintenance on garden tools during winter. It’ll only take half a day to brush and wipe them using an oily cloth, sharpen any blades, oil wooden handles, tighten screws, etc. You’ll be ready for the big jobs in spring and summer, without any time wasted.
