You should measure your tyre pressure regularly Photo: From Reader's Digest

● When filling your petrol tank, stop when you hear the first click of the petrol pump switching off. That click indicates the tank’s optimum level. If you keep filling, it’s likely to overflow.

● Measure your tyre pressure regularly. Driving on under-inflated tyres can add 15 per cent to your petrol bill and take 15 per cent off the life of your tyres.

● You should change your oil every 5000–7000 km if you frequently make short runs of under 10 km, if you drive in city traffic with many stops and starts, if you tow a caravan, trailer or heavy load regularly, or if you drive in dusty, sandy or salty conditions.

● Check your vehicle’s fluid levels every 500 km in order to top them up or replace them. These fluids may include: coolant, anti-freeze, brake/clutch, battery electrolyte, windscreen wiper and headlamp cleaner.

● If you often drive your car on rough roads, or on surfaces covered with anti-freeze or salt, inspect the chassis – including the axle shafts and steering box – to prevent or remedy corrosion and rust. Joints, hinges and door catches may all need lubrication.

● Check and replace windscreen wipers when the rubber in them has worn out; if you don’t, not only will they be ineffective, but they may also scratch the windscreen.
