Maintaining your car in top working order will have the engine working at maximum efficiency while burning minimum fuel. For instance, not only does the oil lubricate metal engine parts, it also helps to keep the engine free of the dirty by-products of fuel combustion.

● When filling your petrol tank, stop when you hear the first click of the petrol pump switching off. That click indicates the tank’s optimum level. If you keep filling, it’s likely to overflow.

● If you often drive your car on rough roads, or on surfaces covered with anti-freeze or salt, inspect the chassis – including the axle shafts and steering box – to prevent or remedy corrosion and rust. Joints, hinges and door catches may all need lubrication.
● Check and replace windscreen wipers when the rubber in them has worn out; if you don’t, not only will they be ineffective, but they may also scratch the windscreen.
