Australia’s Cancer Council predicts that the number of Australians living with or beyond cancer is expected to increase by a staggering 72% in the next 22 years. As always, Australia’s Leukemia Foundation is working tirelessly to prevent that dire outcome.
As part of a new “Cooking for Chemo” program, The Leukaemia Foundation hopes to provide blood cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy and their carers with a host of ideas for eating well during treatment.
Although the booklet does not cover personalised nutritional requirements while undergoing treatment, the recipes themselves are easy to prepare, tasty and nutritious. Cooking for Chemo also contains a variety of food preparation, cooking and storage tips, as well as an excellent checklist for a healthy eating and lifestyle plan.
Bill Petch, CEO of the Leukaemia Foundation, said in a statement that every day, when another 35 Aussies receive the life-changing news that they are diagnosed with a blood cancer, the Leukaemia Foundation is ready to help them face the challenges ahead.
Unlike other cancer treatments, when someone is diagnosed with a blood cancer, treatment typically needs to commence within 24-48 hours of the diagnosis. “Blood cancer treatments place extra demands on people both physically and mentally,” said Petch, “and it is important that dietary intake provides the energy and nutrients necessary to help meet those demands.”
Part of the Cooking for Chemo program includes a series of Free Cooking for Chemo live demonstrations held throughout Australia, where participants can benefit from food tastings, and take home tips, hints and recipes. Topics covered will include how to eat well during neutropenia, managing changes in taste and smell, how to manage your diet when experiencing mouth ulcers, and maintaining nutrition during periods of nausea.
