When planting around a swimming pool, select plants that won't drop leaves in the water Photo: Reader's Digest

The best plants for around pools

AGAPANTHUS
Blue agapanthus are a striking pool-side plant. Their flowers echo the water colour and are in bloom through summer while the pool is in use.

CAMELLIAS
These excellent no-fuss evergreen screening plants have the additional benefit of autumn to winter flowers that provide interest when the pool isn’t being used.

CITRUS
A tub of cumquats or dwarf lemons makes an interesting feature in a hot, sunny pool enclosure.

DIETES
Massed dietes thrive in the hot dry conditions and narrow spaces that often surround swimming pools. Expect flowers to bloom from spring to autumn.

GERANIUMS
The hot and vibrant colours of ivy geraniums are a plus in the ground, in pots or in hanging baskets near swimming pools. Prune in autumn as the swimming season comes to an end.
