Many pet costumes are secured with elastic bands that can wreak serious intestinal havoc if Fido decides to snack on them.

In fact, each year thousands of family pets become seriously ill or die during the holidays because we’re so busy running around that we forget the basics of keeping our four-legged family member safe. So while you’re making sure everyone in your life has the Christmas of their dreams, ensure your pet’s safety with these little tips:

• Cover all exposed electrical cords with duct tape.
• Resist the temptation to trim your tree with tinsel and fake snow. Both are harmful to animals if eaten.
• Hang precious or fragile ornaments towards the top of the tree and make sure any edible decorations are well out of reach.
• Mistletoe, poinsettias, holly and Christmas greens are poisonous so keep them out of Fido’s way.
• Fully cover your tree stand so your pets don’t drink the water.
• Finally, just because you’ve given yourself license to overindulge – don’t pass it on to your pet. Even small doses of sugary, spicy or fatty foods can cause noxious intestinal issues… something every celebration can do without!
