One of the most extraordinary flowers you’ll ever see belongs to a group of fruiting vines you’ve probably eaten on many occasions and that’s the passionfruit, or Passiflora. There are a staggering 500 or so different species in this genus and most have fabulous flowers. In particular the ornamental species Passiflora coccinea or Scarlet passion flower. It’s open star-shaped bloom is over 10cm across and has that typical prominent stamen arrangement, but the colour is glorious. It’s a deep scarlet red and is quite the contrast against the deep crinkly green leaves. Passionfruit plants are pretty short-lived - maybe only a few years  - so you may need to take cuttings to replant every few years. But for most of the year you will see a flower or two on this fast-growing climber.

This plant down the road from my house is in the perfect spot for covering up an ugly fence in a hot sunny spot. Keep these plants happy by applying a composted manure in spring and keeping the water up to them in summer. It may be a bit hard to find in the nurseries and may not have edible fruits but it's worth it just for that very unusual flower.

About this Blog

A constant learning curve, gardening is all about trial and error. Knowledge grows from sharing information between friends, passing down through generations, or just getting it wrong a few times before you get it right. It's about getting grubby outside and aching from digging too much, but then feeling that fall away when you get your first flower or prize fruit off a new tree... and getting so excited you need to tell everyone.

Yours in Green is everything I’ve learnt so far - what to do when, how to do it right the first time, and of course, some frustrations along the way and how to remedy them.
