Building storage tower Photo:

This versatile storage system is made of tall, shallow towers that hold a variety of adjustable shelves and bins. We’ll show you how to construct the basic framework of the towers and add some accessories. You can then devise variations to fit your particular storage needs

STEP 1

Rip two 288 x 2400mm pieces from each sheet of 12mm MDF and cut cleats and one shelf from each. Cut the back and remaining shelves from the other piece of MDF. Use a jig for square cuts and to speed up the job. Screw a 600mm piece of 90 x 45mm pine perfectly perpendicular to the edge of a scrap of plywood (check it with a builder’s square); secure a 6mm stop block to the 90 x 45mm so the cut-off distance is 137mm.

STEP 2

Screw the cleats to the plywood sides using four 25mm particleboard screws. Pre-drill four 5mm holes in each cleat and countersink the screw heads in the MDF so they don’t interfere with the sliding of the bins. Position the first cleat 17mm up from the bottom edge, to allow space for the plywood bottom, and the last cleat 17mm down from the top of each side panel, to leave room for the plywood top.
