STEP 1 Switch on the revolving drum – use a residual current device (RCD) on the lead – put in half the sand and coarse aggregate, then add half the water. Allow the drum to spin for about half a minute, then put in all the cement and the rest of the sand, coarse aggregate and water.

STEP 2 After two or three minutes more mixing, the concrete is ready for use. Tip it straight onto the site or use a wheelbarrow.

STEP 3 When you have finished the first mix, pour some water from the next mix into the mixer to wash excess concrete from the drum wall. At the end of the day, wash out the drum by mixing coarse gravel and plenty of water. Discharge the washings, then pull out the electric plug and scrub down the outside of the machine. Turn the control wheel to invert the drum so that any remaining water can flow out, and in the event of rain, no water will collect in the drum; the measure will reduce the incidence of rusting in either case.
