- Avoid traffic jams by heading out before 3 pm on Friday and set off on Sunday while it’s still light.

- Eat dinner before travelling at night, and delay your departure on Sunday until very late at night, or first thing on Monday morning.

- To minimise potential stress after a weekend away, have your meals prepared for Monday in the fridge or freezer. This means you can take your time, enjoy the trip home and arrive late on Sunday.

- Consult roads and traffic information centres (using the Internet or by phone) that give you details on the state of the traffic in real time.

- When circumstances demand it, take secondary roads. If your car isn’t fitted with a GPS unit, be sure to take adequate road maps and consult them frequently before you get lost!
