In Japan Halloween is seen as a great excuse to dress up Photo: Shutterstock

Ireland: Halloween’s birthplace, where children still trick-or-treat and bonfires burn all over the country.

Germany: Blame Hollywood and a few crafty German businessmen for the rise in Halloween’s popularity here. Children go door-to-door shouting “sweet or sour!” instead of “trick or treat!”

Japan: Halloween is seen as a great excuse to dress in outrageous costumes and party. Most outlandish: an all-night costume party on the subway line that encircles Tokyo.

United Kingdom: Vandalism by youths is fuelling an anti-Halloween feeling in some places.

South America: Halloween is known as Noche de Brujas (night of the witches) and trick-or-treaters ask for Dulce o Truco (sweet-or-trick).

France: While controversial, Halloween has been gaining in popularity – especially among confectionary companies and pastry chefs. It even happened once that pumpkins cropped up at the most unexpected place for Parisian people.
