Fix a Sticky Door
Is your door not opening and closing properly? Well learn how to fix that with these easy steps.

TIP: While the door is removed, check if the top and bottom edges are unfinished. If not, paint or varnish them to limit shrinking and swelling.

STEP 1
Scribe the door
Run masking tape down the door jamb. Set a pencil tip and compass point 3mm apart, and run the point along the jamb. The tape makes the line visible. Remove the door (you may need a helper).

STEP 2
Plane the edge
Use a belt sander, hand plane or electric planer to sand down to the pencil line. Begin with an 80-grit sanding belt. When 1.5mm away from the line, change to a 100-grit belt and sand to the line. Use a 120-grit belt to smooth.

STEP 3
Check the fit and finish
Hang the door and check the fit. (You may need to remove the door again to sand more.) When there’s an even 3mm gap between the door and jamb, stain or paint the edge. Avoid dripping onto the face of the door by using a lint-free rag to apply varnish.
Hinge help
Tighten Hinges with a screwdriver. If the hole is stripped, fill with toothpicks or wood splinters dipped in glue and drive in original screw.
Adjust a Hinge by removing a middle screw from the hinge close to where the door rubs. Drive in a 75mm x 8g screw using a drill. When it’s snug against the hinge, give another quarter turn. Check the fit and adjust accordingly.
