Finishing a timber floor
Polyurethane finishes provide a highly durable surface for timber floors, and will last for many years provided the surface does not receive excessive traffic. Generally, solvent-based polyurethanes are more durable than the water-based varieties.
Tools: Floor applicator, preferably covered with lamb’s wool; 100mm paintbrush; container with plastic bag liner; appropriate respirator for the type of finish being used; buffer, pad and sandpaper screen.
Materials: Water or solvent-based polyurethane.
Before you start: Change your clothes and shoes if you have just finished sanding the floor. Next, clean the floor with a tack cloth if you will be applying a solvent-based finish, or a rag moistened with methylated spirits if you are using a water-based finish. Do not use water on the floor because it will raise the grain of the timber, which will then need re-sanding in affected areas.
Keep the area well ventilated. Electric fans can assist with this.

![]() | STEP 1 Start by reading the floor finish manufacturer’s instructions carefully. Pour a quantity of the finish into a container, and using the 100mm paintbrush, spread the finish along one side of the floor, cutting in against the wall where you will be starting. Always try to keep a wet edge to make it easier to blend strokes. Take care not to ‘polyurethane’ yourself into a corner. Ensure that you begin on the opposite side of the room to the door or an open entry. |
| STEP 2 Now load the applicator with finish and place it on the floor about 300mm from the end wall, next to the wall that is parallel to the grain. This will leave a small puddle of finish. Lift the applicator and position it next to the skirting board and start pulling with the grain. Keep spreading the finish until you get to the other end of the room. If it is a long room, you may need to load the applicator again. Do not leave a puddle at the far end, but feather the finish where it meets the wall. |
| STEP 3 Now go back and start another pass, overlapping the first by 75–100mm. Keep the applicator moving, and make sure the finish is applied evenly. |
