When and why did the world’s rainforests start to disappear? It is hard to estimate how much of the world’s surface was covered with woodland in the past. But what is certain is that our ancestors were burning and hacking down forests as soon as they learnt how to use fire and make sharp tools, at least 250,000 years ago. The process accelerated with the arrival of agriculture around 11,000 years ago. Forests were cleared to make arable land and pasture. Through the Bronze and Iron Ages, wood was used as a fuel to cook and to provide warmth, build houses, make weapons, furniture, boats and ships, and heat kilns and smelting furnaces.
