From 1001 Easy Ways for Earth-Wise Living

Today’s consumers are faced with a wider range of choices than ever before, and a steady stream of sophisticated sales campaigns. To buy economically, as well as to reduce waste, safeguard health and protect the environment, follow these
basic principles.

1 Before making any major purchase, do your research. Avoid buying in a hurry and don’t be persuaded by overzealous salespeople. Sleep on it, if necessary.

2 Consider the running costs as well as the initial price of any item you buy. Many environmentally preferred products, such as compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs), cost more to buy but will save you money in the long run.

3 Select products made from renewable resources, such as plantation timber, wool and silk.

4 Choose items that are built to last. For example, choose a sofa that has a hardwood or steel frame rather than one made of softwood or chipboard, which may warp or break easily. You may pay more up front, but a well-made piece will last longer.

5 Buy reusable products rather than disposable ones. For example, buy washable cloth towels, handkerchiefs, serviettes and cleaning cloths rather than paper, single-use varieties. Avoid disposable cups, glasses and cutlery, too.

6 Buy local produce that is in season. It is usually cheaper and fresher and has less impact on the environment. Markets and roadside stalls are good sources, but some supermarkets also buy from local producers. Support your local food co-op if you have one.

7 Look for all-natural, fully biodegradable, non-toxic products that break down without leaving harmful residues in the environment. (Most materials will biodegrade eventually, but some leave toxic residues.)

8 Avoid products that have excessive and/or non-biodegradable packaging. It is estimated that approximately 10 per cent of every shopping bill goes towards paying for packaging – which you normally just throw away! Moreover, significant amounts of energy are used in the manufacture of packaging. Purchasing refillable containers can help cut this kind of waste.
