Build a dual-purpose bedhead

Follow the instructions and diagrams to construct the bedhead. If you’re not confident cutting MDF components to size, have them cut professionally to make the job easier and faster.

 

Stack the inner side pieces (A1) on top of each other, ensuring the ends are flush. Mark the shelf positions at 42, 581, 1120 and 1659mm, then square across the front edges (see Diagram 1).

2. Attach the rails

Glue and nail a 42 x 18mm rail (E1) to each shelf (D1), using 40 x 1.8mm bullet-head nails or a pneumatic brad nailer. Ensure the top edges of the rails are flush with the shelf face (see Diagram 2).

3. Assemble the units

Screw and glue the shelves (D1) to the inner sides (A1) at the marked positions, using 50mm x 8g screws. Note the top shelf is inverted.
Turn the cabinet face down and attach the inner back (B) using 50mm x 8g screws. Repeat for the other end and centre unit. Join the three units together using 32mm x 8g screws.

4. Fix the outer sides

Complete the bedhead unit by attaching the four outer sides (C) to the inner sides (A1) using 32mm x 8g screws.

5. Sand and paint

Sand with 120-grit abrasive paper. Apply a coat of undercoat/sealer, then two coats of acrylic or oil-based enamel.

 

Lay foam padding (G) on top of each of the backing boards (F). Stretch the fabric (H) over the foam and fasten to the backing board with staples.

7. Attach the fronts

Fix the padded boards to the outer sides (C) from the inside with 45mm x 8g screws. Ensure the outside edges are aligned (see Diagram 3). Fill and sand the screw holes, then touch up the paintwork.
