Dog Buying- Dogs: The Woof Guide

• If you want a watchdog, seek out a German shepherd or Leonberger, both of which have the size to back up the bark. Not so watchful are labrador retrievers.

• For a long-distance running companion, try a German short-haired pointer, Weimaraner or dalmatian, but pass on pugs and bulldogs – (when overheated, these dogs can’t breathe well through their pushed-in noses) and dachshunds (their short legs simply aren’t suited to marathons).

• Need a cuddler? Snuggle up with a greyhound, basset hound or – if you have a big sofa – a Newfoundland. Dogs that need their own space include Jack Russell terriers, Akitas and chows.

• For cramped quarters, a bichon frise, papillon or large couch potato such as a bulldog or basset hound is a good fit. Sharing an apartment with a Great Dane might be a tad too cosy.

• Portuguese water dogs, poodles and wheaten terriers are allergy-friendly breeds, while golden retrievers, Siberian huskies and collies are definitely something to sneeze at.

• If you find grooming therapeutic, consider a collie. For low-maintenance haircare, try a doberman or a smooth-coated chihuahua. Or keep it simple with a Mexican hairless.
