Traditionally made of teak, you’ll find these benches in parks and gardens, weathering beautifully. This one is made from relatively inexpensive Western red cedar. Buy timber that’s seasoned and dressed all round so it’s easier to mark out and won’t shrink after assembly. Also have the supplier cut it to size, which costs a bit extra but is more convenient than ripping and planing it yourself.
The front and back legs are made by laminating three pieces of Western red cedar. Use 140 x 18mm for the back and 70 x 18mm for the front.
The slatted seat with armrests is constructed using traditional mortice-and-tenon joints for strength and durability. When assembled, the timber is sanded and finished with a clear, water-repelling preservative.

STEP 1
Make the legs
Laminate three pieces of Western red cedar together to form the back legs. Spread plenty of exterior glue on the faces, especially near the edges, then align and clamp them until dry. Do the same for the front legs. Mark up and shape the legs using a jigsaw, rounding the top of the back legs
