Rust in old frames

Tools: Paint scraper or small brush, for paint stripper; small cold chisel; hammer; wire brush; safety goggles; small paintbrush; gloves; face mask.

Materials: Rust remover; zinc-based primer; undercoat; enamel paint; mineral turps. Paint stripper and epoxy filler may also be required.
STEP 1
Scrape off the paint, or remove it with a chemical paint stripper. Remember to wear a suitable face mask if the frame has been painted with a lead-based paint.
  STEP 2
Using a small cold chisel, chip off as many of the rust flakes as possible. Then wire-brush the frame by hand, or use a wire wheel or wire-cup brush in a power drill. Wear safety goggles, gloves and a face mask for this part of the job.
STEP 3
Brush over the frame to remove dust and loose particles, then fill any holes with epoxy-based filler and allow it to dry.
STEP 4
Paint the prepared frame with a coat of rust remover.
  STEP 5
When the rust remover is dry, apply a zinc-based metal primer, then an undercoat and two top coats of enamel paint.
STEP 6
If necessary, re-glaze the window, using a suitable window putty.
