Flies Photo: Thinkstock

Flies breed in environments full of bacteria, reproducing quickly when the weather turns warm. The life cycle can be completed in as little as seven days from egg to maggot to adult fly.

PHYSICAL CONTROL
Place kitchen scraps in a plastic bag that can be tied up and disposed of in a bin with a fitted lid. If using scraps for compost add dry material such as sawdust or shredded newspaper to absorb moisture and odours.

NATURAL CONTROL
Reduce fly numbers using barriers or traps such as flyscreens or sticky flypaper, or control them with swatters or carnivorous plants. Fly traps use baits with pheromones to attract and kill the insects.

CHEMICAL CONTROL
There are plenty of low-toxicity insecticides available as surface or contact sprays from hardware stores or supermarkets. Insect
repellants are applied directly to the skin keeping flies from landing and spreading germs.
