Coat stand tree
Build a striking designer piece for under $50

Branches of this coat stand tree are designed to be a convenient height for hanging coats, with space for hats and scarves above. The stand is built by joining two outlines cut from 1800 x 600 x 16mm MDF panels using a jigsaw.

STEP 1
Transfer the Outline
Mark a 100 x 100mm square grid on one MDF panel (see Template) then transfer the design to the grid, shading the motif as a cutting guide.

STEP 2
Cut out the Shape
Clamp the two boards together with the motif on top, securing with screws through the offcut areas. Cut both boards with a jigsaw, sanding smooth with 120-grit abrasive paper.

STEP 3
Cut the Joining Slots
Mark a 750mm x 16mm slot from the top of one piece and from the base of the other, using a straightedge to cut with a jigsaw. Interlock the pieces at 90º and clamp until dry.

STEP 4
Fill the Gaps
Apply a bead of acrylic gap filler along the joint, smoothing with a soapy fi nger. Apply a primer and two coats of acrylic. We used Dulux in Red Box, $9 for a sample pot.
