Clean the surface of your deck
Checking an oiled or stained deck twice a year is all that’s needed to keep it in good shape.

Remove stains and grime with a specialty cleaner. ‘Modern deck cleaners are really effective but make sure the one you choose suits the timber and fi nish that was last applied,’ says builder Luke Van Dyck.
Water activates the cleaner so hose the deck then do a square metre at a time, wetting the area again then applying the cleaner using a stiff yard broom to work it into the surface.
Leave the deck to soak for 15 minutes without letting it dry out completely then hose it until the water runs clean and leave to dry for a day or two before applying the finish.
TIP Treat any areas with algae, mildew or mould with a specialised product applied using a stiff-bristled brush.
