Choosing a bit for screws
The gauge of a screw is the diameter of the shaft. Choose a drill bit to suit the screw, because making the hole too big makes it loose, too small could result in split timber.
FOR PILOT HOLES select the right bit by dividing the gauge by four, reducing the diameter for soft timber.
FOR CLEARANCE HOLES divide the gauge by two and add one.
