This is Australia’s main yacht-charter destination and its ‘100 magic miles’ offer glorious protected waters. Not to be missed are the white sands of Whitehaven Beach, the strikingly designed yacht club on Hamilton Island, and whale-watching in season. Beware of strong southerly winds when you anchor at night.
8 Moreton Bay, QLD
Brisbane is an ideal gateway to sheltered cruising in Moreton Bay. The bay encompasses 350 islands, including Moreton and North and South Stradbroke, which block the Pacifi c swells. City moorings are available at the Botanic Gardens, Dockside Marina and Waterfront Place Marina; downriver is Manly Boat Harbour.
9 Myall Lakes, NSW
The sheltered waterways of this lake system are ideal for navigating by motorboat, small multihull, or trailer yacht. Canoe camping is another great way to view the abundant wildlife and former Aboriginal hunting grounds and middens. The main entry points are Hawks Nest, Nerong,Bungwahl and Bulahdelah, where houseboats are available.
10 Broken Bay, NSW
Only an hour by car from Sydney but a world away thanks to being surrounded by national park, Broken Bay is one of the country’s most idyllic and accessible spots for boating. It is open to the easterly winds, which makes it ideal for yachting, but sheltered from the bite of the south-going East Australian Current, allowing for safe and secluded cruising. There are moorings and small marinas at Cottage Point, Church Point and Brooklyn.
