This simple project is modern without a designer price tag. The top shelving rests on a bulkhead supported by columns with side shelves, and it can be customised to fit your bed. Build it using 16mm MDF, and have the supplier cut the parts for accurate assembly.

We primed the MDF all over, painted the side shelves and inside the top shelving white, with the outside in a pale colour for contrast.
 
 

How to build a shelved bedhead

1. Build the columns
Mark down the column front 16mm from the edges as a guide for securing the sides with adhesive and screws spaced 250mm apart and the heads just below the surface. Make sure the fronts overlap the edges of the sides (see Diagram).
 
2. Make the side shelves
Butt-join the sides to the front, securing the corners with two screws, then secure the top. Mark 600mm from the base of the columns, with another line 16mm below, drill three pilot holes between the lines to secure the shelves from the inside.
 
3. Assemble the top shelving
Position the shelving top and base together to mark the divider lines 410mm apart. Butt-join the shelving ends to the base and top, securing with adhesive and screws. Secure the dividers between the
