Made from treated pine and sections of 25mm bamboo pole, this hardy planter doubles as framework for climbers such as black-eyed Susan vine or climbing hydrangea.

Use a drop saw to cut all the pieces before starting and apply two coats of self-priming exterior grade acrylic to the frame parts before assembly. We used Dulux Weathershield in Charcoal Essence.

How to build the planter

1. Mark the front rails

Place the front rails face to face and use a light pencil to mark the position of the bamboo, starting at the centre and spacing the marks 25mm apart. Draw a depth line 15mm from the front edges of the rails.

2. Add the screws and poles

Drive 25mm x 8g screws into the rails at the spacing marks, leaving 10mm protruding. Position the hollow end of the bamboo over the screws in the base front rail then position the top front rail and clamp.

3. Fit the front stiles

Position the front rails flush against the stiles with a small bead of construction adhesive. Drill and counterbore 8mm clearance holes through the stiles, securing with bugle-head screws.
