Preparing the surface for painting
![]() STEP 1: Use a screwdriver to remove all door locksets and other fittings. Tape over light switch covers, and electrical outlets. Wash the walls and mouldings down thoroughly with warm water and detergent. Remove any mildew with a solution of water, bleach and mild non-ammonia detergent. Use a rag soaked in cleaning solution to wash around electrical outlets and switches.

Latex surgical gloves and rubber gloves
Screwdriver
Detergent and warm water
Clean rags and sponges
Household bleach and mild detergent
Paint scraper
Abrasive paper
Filling knife and jointing compound
Hammer (if needed)
Pole sander
Dust mask, goggles and respirator
Deglosser (optional)
Plastic drop sheets and masking tape
Primer or stain sealer
