Cooking outside means eating and entertaining stay alfresco, and a wood-fired oven gives a different taste to the classic barbecue. The supporting platform and tile surround are separate.
The oven has a heat-resistant base, but you need to build a raised support platform of limestone, concrete or bricks. This one has a 100mm-thick concrete slab with three walls of Hebel autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC) blocks. Steel lintels span the walls to support Hebel floor panels.

How to Build the support platform

STEP 1

Build the support base
Pour a concrete base with F52 reinforcing mesh, measuring 1800 x 1800mm and 100mm thick. Leave it to dry, then lay the three walls of the base using four rows of 600 x 200 x 100mm ACC blocks.

STEP 2

Attach the front
Cut a crossbeam and two uprights from railway sleepers. Secure the uprights to the base with metal angle brackets. Position the crossbeam to be level with the tiles that are put down later, securing to the uprights and panels with angle brackets.

STEP 3

Add lintels and panels
Cut four 75 x 50mm-wide notches at 30mm deep on the inside of the walls to hold two steel lintels. Position the lintels so the ACC panels meet on the centre-line, securing with adhesive and screws.
